Symposium on “Computational Sciences” 

Chandigarh, August 25, 2022: The Department of Computer Science and Applications in collaboration with the Department of Statistics organized a one day Symposium on “Computational Sciences” today. The motive of the symposium was to highlight the relationship between mathematics, statistics and computer science and to promote multidisciplinarity as per NEP 2020. 

The symposium started with the inauguration where Dr. Rohini Sharma, Chairperson Department of Computer Science and Applications and coordinator of the program extended welcome to all the dignitaries. She highlighted the importance of multidisciplinarity to solve real life problems. Coordinator of the program Dr. Manisha from Mathematics Department introduced the chief guest Prof. B.K. Kuthiyala, Chairman, Haryana State Higher Education Council and Former Vice-Chancellor MLC University, Bhopal. Prof. B.K. Kuthiyala shared his views on how technology is changing with time and making things easier for humans. He shared that technologies which are coming up every day are being developed to extend the capabilities of human beings but they are still not able to match the capabilities of man. 

Prof. Y. P Verma, Registrar Panjab University cited the importance of Mathematics and Statistics and how these areas have been complimented by Computer Science. He said that such programs should be organized regularly for the benefit of our young generation. Prof. Anju Goyal, Chairperson Department of Statistics and coordinator of the program proposed vote of thanks to the chief guest and other dignitaries. 

Prof. Kapil K Sharma from South Asian University explained the relationship between mathematics and computer science by discussing how a real world problem is solved by converting it into mathematical form and applying computational techniques. Prof. Sandeep Sharma from Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar discussed ‘Internet of Things’ and its applications in agriculture. He mentioned the role of Artificial Intelligence in the Internet of Things which can solve many complex problems.

The declamation contest on ‘Role of Computational Sciences in the progress of India’ was organized as a part of the symposium where students from the department of Computer Science and Applications, Mathematics and Statistics shared their views. 

Dr. Bharat from University Institute of Legal Studies acted as judge for the declamation contest. The symposium concluded with valedictory session where participants provided positive and fruitful feedback.
