Successful conclusion of kisan mela: PAU recognizes farmers' excellence in agriculture

Ludhiana, March 15, 2024: The second day of the Kisan Mela, held at the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana campus, witnessed enthusiastic participation from farmers across Punjab and neighbouring regions. The highlight of the event was the prize distribution ceremony for the crops competition, graced by renowned rice scientist Padmashri Dr Gurdev Singh Khush as the chief guest and Dr Sukhpal Singh, Chairman of the Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Commission of Punjab, as the special guest. The function was presided over by PAU Vice Chancellor Dr Satbir Singh Gosal. Distinguished guests, including Professor Anthony from Yale University, USA and a delegation of 13 students, added to the event's significance.
In the crops competition, farmers showcased their excellence with Manjit Singh from Village Gharagana, District Mansa, clinching the first prize in Onion production, followed by Varinder Singh from Village Chando Kalan, Haryana, securing the second prize. Similarly, other farmers were recognized for their outstanding contributions in various crop categories, including Garlic, Carrot, Capsicum, Turmeric, Peas, Cabbage, Potato, Tomato, Rice, Sugarcane, and Guava as under:
Garlic: Udeekwan Singh from Kotakpura, Faridkot, clinched the first prize, while Sukhpreet Singh from Village Burj Tharor, Bathinda, secured the second prize.
Carrot: Manjit Singh from Village Nagra, District Sangrur, bagged the first prize.
Capsicum: Lakhwinder Singh from Village Toot, District Ferozepur, emerged victorious with the first prize.
Turmeric: Amanpreet Kaur from Village Jalvaidi Kalan, District Fatehgarh Sahib, and Sarwan Singh from Village Boolpur, Kapurthala, claimed the first and second prizes, respectively.
Peas: Tirth Singh from Village Sandor, District Malerkotla, secured the first prize, while Sukhvir Singh from Village Chakk Bhaike, Mansa, secured the second prize.
Cabbage: Nirmal Singh from Hayat Nagar, Gurdaspur, stood first, and Paramjit Singh from Village Bukkan Singh Nagar, Faridkot, stood second.
Potato: Sukhjinder Singh, Village Dhilwan Kalan Faridkot, was awarded the first prize, while Jaswant Saharan, Village Ramkot, Fazilka, took home the second prize.
Tomato: Jikki Singh from Village Rameana, District Faridkot, received the first prize.
Marigold: Balbir Singh, Village Kot Khalsa clinched the first prize.
Sugarcane: Sumega Jakhar, Village Panjkosi, District Fazilka, Gurbhej Singh, Village Sikanderpur, and District Jalandhar won the first and second prizes, respectively.
Guava: Gagandeep Kumar, Village Dhaani Latkan, Fazilks secured the first position.
Kinnow: The first Prize was won by Ajay Bishnoi from Village Sukhchain, District Fazilka
Lemon: The first Prize was secured by Ranbir Singh from Village Dharamgarh, District Fatehgarh Sahib
Strawberry (Winter Dawn): Nachhatar Singh from Village Tut, District Ferozepur, won the First Prize.
Strawberry: Nikhil Setia from Village Patti Bihla, District Fazilka, won First Prize.
Sugar: Shiv Kumar from Village Maura, District Sangrur, stood first
Jaggery: First Prize was bagged by Gurpreet Singh from Village Dhuri Bhojwali, District Sangrur

Tractor Driven Equipment: Mess. Seron Mechanical Works (Jagatjit) from Village Seron, District Sangrur
Electric Motor Engine, pumping sets, sprayers, etc.: Messrs. Falcon Garden Tools from District Ludhiana
Water Saving Equipment/Machines: M/s. Rajsan Agro Engineers from Ahmedgarh District Malerkotla
Agricultural Processing Machinery: M/s. KC Marketing Company from District Ludhiana
Fertilizers: M/s Chambal Fertilizers and Chemicals from Chandigarh
Pesticides: M/s. IPL Biological Limited from Gurugram, Haryana
In self-help group ventures, the first prize was won by Karamjit Singh Shergill, Shergill Agricultural Farms Village Majhal Khurd District Patiala, and the second prize went to Mrs. Satinder Kaur, Rose Designers, Dugri, Ludhiana.
Among PAU stalls in the field demonstration category, the Department of Agronomy and the Department of Floriculture and Landscaping were honoured with the first and second prizes, respectively. Punjab Naujawan Sanstha, FASS from Fazilka, bagged the first prize, and FASS Tarn Taran stood second.
Additionally, teams from KVK Muktsar, followed by KVK Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, were honoured with the first and second positions, respectively, for their significant contributions to promoting the agricultural literature of PAU for the year 2022-23.
The event concluded on a high note, celebrating the achievements and innovations in agriculture while inspiring farmers to continue their efforts towards sustainable farming practices.
