Successful Cadaver Organ Donation at DMC&H
Dayanand Medical College & Hospital (DMC&H), Ludhiana has achieved a significant milestone in the field of organ transplantation with the successful completion multi-organ cadaver donation and transplant. A 54-year-old male patient from Ludhiana, with a history of hypertension, was admitted to DMC&H after suffering a severe brain bleed and was declared brain. Recognizing the potential to save lives, the medical team sensitively approached the family with the possibility of organ donation, informing them that a single donor can save up to eight lives through this noble act.

Ludhiana, July 20, 2025: Dayanand Medical College & Hospital (DMC&H), Ludhiana has achieved a significant milestone in the field of organ transplantation with the successful completion multi-organ cadaver donation and transplant. A 54-year-old male patient from Ludhiana, with a history of hypertension, was admitted to DMC&H after suffering a severe brain bleed and was declared brain. Recognizing the potential to save lives, the medical team sensitively approached the family with the possibility of organ donation, informing them that a single donor can save up to eight lives through this noble act.
The donor's family, showing immense courage and compassion in a moment of grief, gave their consent for organ donation. Under the expert guidance of Dr. P.L. Gautam, the DMC&H medical team successfully retrieved the liver, kidneys, and corneas from the deceased donor. The liver was transplanted into a 32-year-old male from Sirsa who had long been suffering from complications. This liver transplant was performed by the DMC&H Liver Transplant Team, led by Dr. Gursagar Singh Sahota, Chief Liver Transplant Surgeon. The corneas were successfully transplanted by the Ophthalmology Department under the supervision of Dr. Gurvinder Kaur, Professor & Head. The kidneys were sent to another hospital via a green corridor to ensure timely transplantation and save additional lives.
Bipin Gupta, Secretary, DMC&H Managing Society, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the donor and his family for their selfless contribution. He also commended the tireless efforts of the entire DMC&H team, acknowledging that this achievement marks a historic moment for the institution. He emphasized that this successful in-house multi-organ transplant not only represents a medical success but also a message of humanity and hope.
Dr. G.S. Wander, Principal, and Dr. Sandeep Sharma, Medical Superintendent of DMC&H, congratulated all the involved teams for their dedication and highlighted the hospital’s advanced infrastructure and preparedness for cadaveric organ donation. They praised the seamless coordination among doctors, nurses, para-medical staff, and the administration that made the organ retrieval and transplantation possible. Both doctors echoed that every organ donor is a true hero who continues to give the gift of life even in death.
In a solemn gesture of respect and gratitude, the donor's body was respectfully escorted back to his residence with honour by the hospital administration. A heartfelt tribute was paid by DMC&H for the heroic act of the donor and the compassionate decision of his family.
