TOMORROW BEING THE PARKASH UTSAV OF SRI GURU GRANTH SAHIB JI ...Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji was first established in Sri Harmandir Sahib, Amritsar on this day in 1604.
Guru Arjan Dev who by constructing the Golden Temple in the middle of Amrit Sarovar conceived it as abode of God. He had also decided to compile the Granth by including hymns of Gurus, poetry of various Pir Faqirs and he called a meeting of Bhai Gurdas, Baba Budha Ji and other prominent Sikhs, who adjudged that hymns of Sikh Gurus, Bhagtas and Bhattas should be compiled in one volume. Guru Arjan Dev deputed Baba Budha Ji as in-charge of Darbar Sahib. Guru Nanak Dev Ji had handed over all his works to Guru Angad Dev Ji that was called Pothi Sahib Guru Nanak Dev Ji had also collected the works of Bhagats (Saints) and with his own comments had kept them along with his own hymns.
The holy Granth was compiled in three years, after the monumental work had been completed in 1604 A.D. i.e September 1st, 1604 , Bhai Bano was deputed to go to Lahore to get the holy Granth binded. The Guru sent messages far and wide that holy Granth would be manifested inside the Harimandir Sahib on Bhaadon Shudi Ekam Samvat 1661 Bikrami. A large number of devotees reached Ramsar. In the evening the Granth Sahib was wrapped in beautiful silky clothes. After the recitation of Kirtan Sohla and Ardas, Baba Budha placed the scripture on his head, followed by the congregation, who were singing holy hymns and playing music, carried it to the Guru’s Chamber to be laid there for the night. Baba Budha Ji placed the holy Granth on his head and with great reverence took it to Harimandir Sahib. A large number of devotees reached Harimandir Sahib (Golden Temple , Amritsar). The Guru addressed his congregation and said, “This Granth is compiled as spiritual ship to cross the worldly ocean. The man who reads, listens and contemplates it would peacefully achieve salvation.” Then Guru Arjan Dev explained and clarified the inner meaning of the hymn. This was unique event for the devotees. The first hymn which Baba Budha ji recided was as under:
God Himself has come to fulfil the affair of Saints,
He himself has come to do the task,
And now blessed is the earth, the tank
And the Nectar with which it is filled.
The final shape to Guru Granth Sahib was given at Guru ki Kanshi (Damdama Sahib) in 1705- 1706 A .D. by Guru Gobind Singh. He re-edited it and added the Baani of Guru Tegh Bahadur to it. This recenstion contains 1430 pages and 5867 hymns. The Baani of Guru Granth Sahib declares that the world is precreation of one Supreme Father and therefore all are brothers. The duty of man is to keep away himself aloof from the muddy tentacles of Maya like lust, anger, avarice, attachment and pride just as lotus floats above the muddy water. But this can be attained by dedication to God through meditation.
In Guru Granth Sahib many similies and metaphors has been used to clarify the idea. Images from nature and daily life have been used abundantly. Images used from nature are very beautiful and heart moving. These images include clouds, lightning, sun rise, sun set, dawn, the rain, the wind, the sky, the forests, the plants, the flowers, the gardens, the animals, birds, insects, pools, rivers and oceans.
Today we all should atleast follow and read as Finally the holy book says that really awakened person is that one who contemplates the Name of God and remains absorbed in it.
