The Per Capita Consumption of plastics is still low at just 32 to 35 kgs when compared to the world average of 65 kgs and the US consumption of 75 kgs.  This augurs good scope for growth, said Mr Vimalesh Gupta, the President of TAAPMA

Plastics among other materials are the easiest to recycle compared to all other materials.  India records the highest amount of plastics recycling.  70% of plants produced are recycled in India.  Thanks to the good rag-pickers system in India a major component of plastic waste generated is recycled.

When asked about the plastics ban, Vimalesh said single-use plastics were banned a year ago.  Despite the ban, we have grown tremendously.  There is a problem with single-use plastics which is a very small part of plastics. There is no alternative to plastics.  Can you imagine any other material such as blood sachets, or milk in glass bottles?  The plastic industry continues to grow till such time there is a very good alternative, he said.
