Chandigarh, March 12, 2013:The Punjab government has decided to install Solar Power Plants with a capacity of 5 KW to 15 KW each aggregating to a total of 245 KW in 45 Akal Academies of the Kalgidhar Trust across the state.

Disclosing this here today, Bikram Singh Majitjhia, Minister for New and Renewable Energy said that the state government was committed to provide sustainable solution to increasing power demand and shift to clean and green energy production. He said that with the installation of these Solar Power Plants, educational institutions would be able to fulfil their daily electricity needs.

He said that the government has recently approved its New Renewable Energy Policy 2012 for establishing Solar Power Plants, Solar Biomass Co-generation and Micro/Mini Hydel Projects besides waste to energy projects for transformation from fossil to renewable resources of energy.

The Minister also said that it was a major step for exploiting vast potential of Solar Energy available in Punjab. These roof top solar installations are located closer to the load and would prove to be highly economically and sustainable method of providing power to remote locations and villages.  Decentralised Solar Plants would also considerably reduce the distribution losses and voltage drop at peak day time load would be minimized.

He further informed that state has launched a major rooftop Solar Photovoltaic Power Projects programme under which the rooftop SPV Power Projects would be set up at various important government institutional and religious buildings. PEDA has already commissioned 26 nos. rooftop SPV power plants having total capacity 693 KWp in remote villages of Border Districts of Gurdaspur, Tarantaran and government buildings.  PEDA would soon invite bids for establishing Megawatt Scale Solar Photovoltaic Power Plants in the State to enhance the share of solar power in the State as envisaged in the NRSE Policy 2012 of Punjab government, said Majithia.
