Rohtak/Chandigarh, August 23, 2026: Congress MP from Rohtak Deepender Singh Hooda issued a clarification over his recent remarks on the death of former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar, saying his statement had been “twisted and misrepresented” over the past two days.
In a video message released to the media, Hooda said an English word that he had never used was also added to his statement, giving it a meaning he never intended.
“I never intended to hurt the sentiments of any Sikh brother. If anyone’s sentiments have been hurt, I am your brother and I express my regret,” Hooda said.
Describing the Sikh community as the pride of the nation, Hooda said the community’s sacrifices—from India’s freedom struggle to defending the country’s borders—could never be forgotten. He said his relationship with the Sikh community was like that of family members, adding that the two communities had always stood together as brothers whenever needed.
Hooda also referred to his family’s association with the freedom movement, saying his great-grandfather, Chaudhary Maturam, was sentenced to ‘Kala Pani’ along with Sardar Ajit Singh, uncle of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, during the 1908 ‘Pagri Sambhal Jatta’ movement.
Recalling the farmers’ agitation, Hooda said he had been among the first to stand with farmers from Punjab and would continue to support them in every struggle.
On 1984 anti-Sikh riots, Deepender Hooda said he stood with the Sikh community in its fight for justice over the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. “The victims should get justice and no guilty person should be spared,” he said.
The Rohtak MP ended the video message with, “Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh.”
