Sher Singh Ghubaya, SAD candidate from Ferozepur Lok Sabha seat taking out victory procession on Friday.

Ferozepur, May 16, 2014: Riding pillion on his luck and “Modi Wave”, Sher Singh Ghubaya, Akali Dal candidate from Ferozepur Lok Sabha seat defied all the odd and kept alive the “Akali Dal Bastion” by beating his arch-rival, Congressman Sunil Jakhar, with a margin of 31420 votes. Ghubaya gained 10349 more votes, comparing to his performance in 2009.

Out of nine assembly constituencies, Sher Singh Ghubaya maintained a good lead at regions dominated by Rai Sikh Community, especially his lead of 32888 votes from Jalalabad assembly constituency, which finally proved decisive.

Sunil Jakhar was at the counting centre at Ferozepur from the beginning, accepted his defeat open heartily and said Congress need to introspect the reasons behind this defeat. When asked about the “Modi factor” he said, there were lots of other issues besides “Modi Wave” at this border area constituency, but it seems people had different preferences. He also accepted the fact the top brass of Congress failed to present their achievements before people.

Satnam Pal Kamboj, the AAP candidate from Ferozepur, secured 113412 votes and most of the people believed that he harmed Sunil Jakhar’s prospective more than Ghubaya’s.

A Jubilant Sher Singh Ghubaya, said that the victory has not brought any surprise for him and he was always confident about his victory. Owing his victory to Parkash Singh Badal, Chief Minister, Punjab and Sukhabir Badal, Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab, Ghubaya said, he is thankful to the top brass of Akali Dal, which showed a great confidence in his abilities.

Denying AAP phenomena in the state, Ghubaya said that people have rejected AAP throughout India. He said AAP has befooled people and sooner or later people of Punjab shall also come to know about AAP.

Gurdial Singh Dhillon of Congress was the last who had won Ferozepur seat in 1985 and since then the Ferozepur seat has been vulnerable for Congress and Congress was expecting the same magic which Sunil’s father Balram Jakhar had created in 1980 and had won this seat with a huge margin.

NOTA (None of the Above) scored 7685, fourth highest after Ghubaya (Akali Dal), Sunil Jakhar (Congress), Satnam Pal Kamboj (AAP) and Ram Kumar Prajapati (BSP).
