“She starts as one person and becomes someone entirely different by the end”: Ashi Singh gets candid about  Afreen’s journey in Amazon MX Player’s First Copy S2

Amazon MX Player, Amazon’s free video streaming service, recently released the second season of First Copy, pushing the story of Arif and Afreen into a deeper, darker, and far more emotional chapter. Set in early 2000s Mumbai, a city buzzing with pirated tapes, underworld deals, and back-alley ambition, this season picks up with Arif fighting to hold together an empire that’s collapsing faster than he can rebuild it. Standing within that chaos is Afreen, who grows steadier, bolder, and more self-aware as the world around her spirals. While Arif battles the streets, Afreen fights a quieter war of her own.

In the series, Ashi Singh brings a striking emotional arc to Afreen, a character she sees as someone who survives storms most people would crumble under. Reflecting on her journey, Ashi shares, “Afreen’s journey is full of ups and downs, but she never gives up. No matter what she goes through, confusion, heartbreak, or betrayal, she always finds a way forward. Eventually, she discovers herself, finds her strength, and learns how to live without Arif. That’s what I really love about her. She starts as one person and becomes someone entirely different by the end, and bringing that transformation to life was beautiful.”

Ashi also spoke about shaping Afreen’s emotional duality, adding, “I did add both innocence and depth to this chaotic universe, and I worked very hard on that balance. I wanted Afreen to be relatable. She supports Arif even when he’s wrong, because that’s who she is. She’s human. But I never wanted her to look negative. I wanted her to be innocent yet intelligent, so I focused on giving her small emotional moments. She’s always in her head, and that helped me keep her real and relatable.”
