Ludhiana, July 30, 2026: On the 31st July martyrdom anniversary of Shaheed Udham Singh, it is important to remember him not merely as the avenger of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, but as a lifelong revolutionary of the Ghadar Movement vehemently said noted historian Dr. Navtej Singh Halwarvi, an alumnus of S.C.D. Government College, Ludhiana who served as a Professor and head of History department at Panjabi University.
Navtej talking to Alumni Association’s organizing secretary Brij Bhushan Goyal said, “As per his archival research from various records Udham Singh had embraced the ideals and activities of the Ghadar Party well before the Jallianwala Bagh tragedy. The massacre of 1919 deepened his resolve, while the martyrdom of Shaheed Bhagat Singh in 1931 further strengthened his determination to continue the revolutionary struggle against British imperialism. His revolutionary career extended across several countries, where he worked with Ghadar activists, made available resources, endured imprisonment and resorted to hunger strikes, and remained committed to India's freedom. The execution of Michael O'Dwyer in London on 13 March 1940 was therefore not an isolated act of revenge but the culmination of decades of disciplined revolutionary commitment inspired by the Ghadar movement and the sacrifices of countless freedom fighters. Remembering Udham Singh in this broader historical perspective is the most fitting tribute to his martyrdom on 31 July“.
Alumni of the college have hailed Prof Dr Navtej Singh Halwarvi’s research. They also said that we often name cities and colonies after martyrs but never tell our generations about the history of their struggle and sacrifices.
