SCS celebrates National Newspaper Day with a Seminar
Panjab University, Chandigarh today celebrated National Newspaper Day with a lecture on the theme of ‘Relevance of Newspapers in Contemporary Scenario’.
Chandigarh, October 29, 2026: Panjab University, Chandigarh today celebrated National Newspaper Day with a lecture on the theme of ‘Relevance of Newspapers in Contemporary Scenario’.
Resident Editor of The Indian Express, Chandigarh, Manraj Grewal Sharma, addressed the students at School of Communication Studies (SCS). She discussed how newspapers are constantly thriving towards making the citizens aware and raising the issues often neglected by the authorities. She highlighted about the growth of newspapers post-Covid, the growing regional politics, and the digitalisation of newspapers in modern era. She emphasised how newspapers are credible and have influenced many suo moto cases by the courts and continue to work as a watchdog of Indian democracy. She gave regional and local examples from the Tricity administration about the newspapers raising the important issues like road infrastructure and cleanliness, over which action was taken later by the Municipal Corporation.
Department Chairperson Prof. Archana R Singh outlined the history of Indian newspapers that began with the Hickey’s Bengal Gazette, the importance of National Newspaper Day and how newspapers are a popular source of authentic and reliable information in today’s time. She talked about the journey of Manraj Grewal as an alumnus of SCS and highlighted how SCS continues to develop strong relations with its alumni.
Earlier, SCS student Vani, Sunidhi, and Deepika gave the welcome address and shared about the life and achievements of Manraj Grewal Sharma, followed by SCS presenting a token of appreciation to her. The lecture ended with a questionnaire where the students raised questions about the use of AI as an editing tool in newsrooms, relevance of printed newspapers in the time of rapidly growing technology, and influence and reach of news shown on television.
Avinash Thakur, the department representative of SCS, thanked Manraj Grewal for the insightful session that she gave to the students on the occasion of National Newspaper’s Day.
