Chandigarh, July 31, 2023: Panjab University’s Sanskrit department and Dayanand Chair for Vedic Studies performed ‘Bhumi-Tarpana’ (worship of the earth) today.

Tree plantation was organised in this event. Faculty members, office staff, research scholars and students of the department took part in the event.

Prof. V. K. Alankar, Academic Incharge of the department, said during the event, “Dharaayaa bhooshanam vrikshaah, that is, trees are the ornaments of earth”. He further mentioned an episode from Ramayana, where the sons of Sagara created a disturbance in sage Matanga’s forest.

“Matanga Rishi said that the forest was raised by him like his own son, which shows the kind of love and responsibility our enlightened Rishis had toward nature as a whole”, said Prof. Alankar.
