Pune: Clubfoot, a congenital condition where a child’s feet are turned inward and downward, affects approximately 1.18 per 1,000 live births globally, which means about 176,000 infants are born with the condition each year. In India, clubfoot is one of the most common congenital deformities, impacting a significant number of children each year. However, with early diagnosis and proper treatment, the condition is completely treatable.
Sahyadri Hospitals recently partnered with the Club Foot Medical Foundation to host an informative awareness session at Sahyadri Hospital, Bibwewadi in Pune, aimed at spreading awareness about the condition and its successful treatment options. The event focused on educating parents and caregivers about the importance of early intervention and the Ponseti method, which is the gold standard for treating clubfoot.
The Ponseti method involves a series of gentle plaster casts, followed by a minor surgical procedure if needed, and the use of special corrective shoes until the child is about four years old. Once treated, children with clubfoot can walk, run, and engage in physical activities like any other child, without limitations caused by the condition.
“We believe that raising awareness is the first step in ensuring that children with clubfoot receive the proper care they need,” said Dr. Sameer Desai, Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon at Sahyadri Super Speciality Hospital, Bibwewadi. “The Ponseti method has a success rate of over 95%, and early intervention is key to ensuring the best possible outcome for children affected by this condition.”
Since 2012, the foundation has been providing free treatment for underprivileged children diagnosed with clubfoot, enabling them to lead normal, active lives. The session at Sahyadri Hospitals was a part of the ongoing efforts to reach more families, offering them information, medical consultations, and follow-up care.
During the session, around 120 children, along with their parents, attended the sessions. These children were already treated patients, and many of them received immediate follow-up care. The overall response was highly positive, with many families expressing gratitude for the opportunity to seek guidance from medical professionals. Marathi actor Bhushan Pradhan also participated in the event, encouraging parents to act quickly when it comes to diagnosing and treating clubfoot. Bhushan, who has joined as a supporter this year, emphasized the importance of awareness in tackling this treatable condition.
Sahyadri Hospitals remains committed to providing medical care and emotional support to children and families affected by clubfoot, helping them overcome challenges and lead fulfilling lives. The session was a step forward in creating an informed and supportive community for children with this condition.
