S. K. Shah Gold Medal and the Lifetime Achievement Award presented
Dr. Om Narain Bhargava, FNA, Honorary Professor in the Geology Department at Panjab University, was awarded the S. K. Shah Gold Medal and the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Palaeontological Society of India during their Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
Chandigarh, November 7, 2025: Dr. Om Narain Bhargava, FNA, Honorary Professor in the Geology Department at Panjab University, was awarded the S. K. Shah Gold Medal and the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Palaeontological Society of India during their Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
The honour recognized his pioneering and original contributions to Himalayan Stratigraphy and Palaeontology, which have significantly advanced the understanding of the evolution of Precambrian basement metamorphic complexes in the Himalaya and the overall geological history of the region. His studies covered Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Bhutan over a period of six decades. He is credited with the discovery of 460 and 270-million-year-old coral reefs in the Spiti. Many leading organisations and academies have acknowledged his work in Himalayan Geology by awarding him numerous awards, including the Lifetime Geoscience Award from the Government of India, presented by the President of India in 2023.
In his honour, a trilobite genus Bhargavia, ammonite species Flemingitesbhargavai, and Giumalicerasbhargavai, and a bryozoan Ulrichostylusbhargavai have been named by American, Swiss, and Austrian experts.
