Ujjain, Aug 26 (IANS) A ruckus broke out at the Mahakaleshwar temple in Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain on Wednesday after a group of Kanwariyas allegedly breached barricades and tried to enter the Nandi Hall, leading to a scuffle with security personnel and injuries to several guards.

The incident occurred when around 100 pilgrims, who had arrived from Khedighat in Omkareshwar carrying Kanwars, allegedly attempted to move beyond the designated route for devotees, officials said.

According to the temple management, the pilgrims crossed the first set of barricades and moved towards the Nandi Hall despite being stopped by security personnel.

When the guards tried to prevent their entry, the pilgrims allegedly began jumping over the barricades.

The ensuing confrontation resulted in some barricades collapsing and injuries to security personnel.

A video of the incident that surfaced on social media showed security personnel struggling to control the crowd as the pilgrims attempted to cross the barricades and move towards the Nandi Hall.

The footage also showed security staff trying to push back the crowd amid the commotion.

The temple management committee alleged that some unruly persons also damaged barricades and other security arrangements and attempted to move donation boxes and gain unauthorised access towards the sanctum sanctorum.

"The persons involved in the incident are being identified and legal action will be taken against them," the temple management committee said.

Four security personnel were injured in the incident, with two of them reportedly suffering serious injuries to their legs and head. They were taken for medical treatment.

Police personnel present at the spot intervened and took some of the persons involved to the Mahakal police station.

Police are examining video footage and other available evidence to identify those involved in the confrontation.

Further action will be taken on the basis of the investigation, officials said.

The Mahakaleshwar temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and attracts devotees from across the country throughout the year.
