Roadways Contractual Workers on indefinite strike, passengers suffer

Ferozepur, August 25, 202: Hundreds of contractual employees working in Punjab Roadways and PUNBUS today started their state wide protest and staged a “dharna” at the cantonment bus stand. During the protest, the movement of the buses was completely halted due to which the commuters had to bear the brunt.

Due to unavailability of government transport, the commuters were left with no choice but to opt for private transport.
While addressing the congregation, Resham Singh Gill State President Punjab Roadways and PRTC Contractual Employees Union said that the dharna will not be lifted till the time their demands are not met. “Before attaining the power, the state government had promised to us that all the contractual employees working in Punjab roadway and PUNBUS will be regularized. However, all their promises were proven hollow and we are still moving from pillar to post. The stand of the Congress government has proved that even this government is working in favour of transport mafia”, said union leader Jatinder Singh.

“The present condition of the Punjab roadways is due to wrong policies of the state government. Thousands of people have lost their jobs during the last few years while on the other hand the condition of the government buses deteriorated due to lack of maintenance and upkeep. Who will take the responsibility of the present condition”, said Kanwaljit Singh Manochahal, Depot Secretary.

The union leaders said that during the recent meetings, they were assured by the representatives of the state government that their posts will be regularize but till now all their pleas have fallen on deaf ears.
