ROAD ACCIDENTS: Ludhiana Becomes India’s Deadliest City – Punjab Stands Among Top Three Most Fatal States- NCRB Report 2023
“The Government has blood on its hands. Road safety has never been their priority. They can play politics, but they cannot bring back 4,906 lost lives,” said Dr. Soi.
Ludhiana, October 1, 2025: The newly released NCRB Report 2023 has sounded a chilling alarm for Punjab. It reveals that Ludhiana has emerged as the third deadliest city in India, after Agra and Asansol, while Punjab stands as the third most fatal state in the country after Mizoram and Bihar.
The figures are horrifying: Ludhiana: Out of 504 reported accidents, 402 people lost their lives – a staggering 80% fatality rate; Punjab: Out of 6,276 accidents, 4,906 people died – a fatality rate of 78%. This means nearly 8 out of 10 road accidents in Punjab end in death. The roads of Punjab have turned into graveyards, claiming innocent lives every single day.
Dr. Kamal Soi, International Road Safety Expert and Spokesperson, BJP Punjab, expressed deep anguish at the report, saying that “These are not just numbers, they are fathers who never returned home, mothers whose children are now orphans, and young lives that ended before they even began. Ludhiana, my own city, has today earned the shameful tag of being India’s most dangerous city to drive in. As a Punjabi, my heart bleeds; as a road safety expert, I am alarmed; and as a BJP spokesperson, I am angry at the apathy of the ruling dispensation. This is nothing less than a massacre on the roads of Punjab.”
Exposing Governance Failure, Dr Soi said, the report is a mirror of the utter failure of the Punjab Government because there is no effective enforcement against overspeeding, drunk driving, and rash driving; neglected black spots, blind curves, and unsafe junctions that continue to kill; lack of trauma care and emergency response, where victims bleed to death in the golden hour; and corruption and mismanagement in transport and traffic departments.
“The Government has blood on its hands. Road safety has never been their priority. They can play politics, but they cannot bring back 4,906 lost lives,” said Dr. Soi.
Stating that BJP Punjab’s Call for Drastic Steps, he said BJP Punjab demands an immediate, uncompromising action plan such as Declare a Road Safety Emergency in Punjab with a crash-reduction mission; Strict Enforcement Blitz: Speed cameras, alcohol checks, zero tolerance for violations; Rectify Killer Black Spots with immediate redesign, signage, and lighting; Golden Hour Guarantee: Every victim must receive trauma care within 60 minutes; Fix Accountability: Transport & Police officers must be held answerable for each lapse; and Community Engagement: Schools, colleges, and transport unions must be mobilized for road discipline.
A Cry for Humanity
Concluding, Dr Soi said, “Each accident victim is not just a statistic. Behind every death is a child who will never see their father again, a mother waiting endlessly at the door, or a family destroyed forever. This tragedy must shake our collective conscience. Punjab cannot afford to lose its youth and breadwinners on blood-soaked roads. The BJP demands action – and action now.”
