Bengaluru, October 31, 2025: Music has an incredible influence on stroke survivors and can play a key role in rehabilitation and recovery, supporting not only physical, but also emotional and cognitive healing.
Music therapy is an evidence-based form of rehabilitation that enhances neuroplasticity by activating networks in both hemispheres of the brain. On behalf of World Stroke Day, an initiative by Manipal Hospitals focused on helping stroke survivors heal through music, was conducted on October 31, 2025, at the Indian Music Experience Museum (IME), Bengaluru. The event explored the power of music therapy in stroke recovery, bringing together notable stroke survivors, caregivers, and medical professionals for a special experiential day of healing and connection.
“Though a single exposure is not enough, incorporating music therapy into daily rehabilitation can significantly enhance recovery outcomes,” said Dr. Richa Singh, Consultant  - Neurology, Manipal Hospital Old Airport Road , Bengaluru. “Those who continue with such therapies tend to do better in the long run.”
Based on the type of post-stroke deficit, specific music-based interventions are used. For example, melodic Intonation Therapy aids speech and language recovery, while Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation and Music-Supported Motor Therapy are commonly used for improving balance and motor coordination.
Patients participated in a guided museum tour, got a chance to experience an incredibly calming sound bath, and had an insightful conversation with a neurologist, all of which helped them rediscover balance through rhythm, sound, and mindfulness. Ideas and interactions focused on the safety and inclusiveness of event attendees, while ensuring that all were medically stable and surrounded by support.
Through this initiative, Manipal Hospitals reconfirmed their commitment to holistic healing, bridging clinical care and creative therapies that support the healing of the mind and body.
