Hoshiarpur, August 20, 2026: Rayat Bahra Professional University (RBPU), Hoshiarpur, organized a high-impact seminar titled “Menace of Substance Drug Abuse: Uncovering the Burden on Women” to address the escalating issue of substance addiction and its socio-economic impact on women, families, and society.
The event was chaired by Vijaya Rahatkar, Chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW), who delivered the keynote address and administered an anti-drug pledge. She underscored the critical need for proactive prevention, community awareness, and collective responsibility to mitigate the silent suffering of women affected by substance abuse.
Sharing his perspectives, Gurvinder Singh Bahra, Chairman of Rayat Bahra Group, said, "Substance abuse does not merely harm the individual; it destabilizes the entire family fabric, placing an overwhelming emotional, financial, and social burden on women. Educational institutions bear a profound responsibility to lead from the front, foster awareness among youth, and create safe, resilient support systems that empower women and help build a drug-free society."
Addressing the gathering, Ex-MP Avinash Rai Khanna said, "Tackling the menace of drug addiction requires an unyielding, multi-level grassroots movement. When addiction enters a household, it is the mothers, wives, and daughters who endure the deepest trauma. Society, leadership, and academia must join hands to establish robust community-level support and rehabilitation mechanisms to protect our families."
The seminar was also addressed by Dr. Chander Mohan, Vice Chancellor of RBPU, alongside faculty members and students, concluding with a shared commitment to building a safer, healthier, and addiction-free society.
