Chandigarh, June 29, 2026: Former Deputy Chief Minister and Member of Parliament Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa stated that the Punjab government's approach towards the highly sensitive and faith-related issue of sacrilege has been extremely irresponsible and alarming. He remarked that while the issue is extremely serious, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government appears equally non-serious in its handling of it. He said that today's discussion at the Panthic Kachheri clearly revealed that several AAP legislators had approved the Sacrilege Bill without conducting a thorough study or engaging in adequate deliberations.
Randhawa said that the most shocking revelation was that many legislators were not even aware of the legal definition of the important term "custodian" used in the Bill. When the very lawmakers responsible for drafting and passing legislation do not fully understand its fundamental provisions, their approval becomes nothing more than a mere formality.
Sukhjinder Randhawa alleged that in its attempt to please the party leadership in Delhi, the Punjab government is ignoring the core and highly sensitive aspects of this important legislation, which is deeply condemnable. He said that the issue of sacrilege is closely linked to the faith of millions of devotees, and therefore, any haste or superficial approach in dealing with such a matter is completely inappropriate.
He further stated that the government should have first undertaken extensive consultations with all stakeholders, religious institutions, and legal experts before proceeding with the legislation. He urged the government to reconsider all provisions of the Sacrilege Bill, facilitate a comprehensive discussion, and secure the confidence of all concerned parties before taking any further action. Only then can future controversies be avoided.
