Ludhiana, October 13, 2026: As reports of young lives being destroyed by drugs continue to emerge from Punjab, the safety of anti-drug activists has also become a matter of grave concern. The alleged suicide of a person who had raised the issue of drugs in Sangrur, followed by the reported shooting death of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota in Mansa, has triggered public anguish, anger and a sense of insecurity.
Social activist Brij Bhushan Goyal questioned why, despite repeated government declarations against drugs, effective control over the alleged illegal sale of addictive substances remains a challenge. If citizens themselves have to confront such activities, who is responsible for their protection? He called for an impartial review of the functioning of the police, intelligence agencies and the Drug Control Department. Any suspected negligence or collusion at any level must be investigated. He demanded a fair and time-bound investigation into the Mansa incident, punishment for those found guilty in accordance with law, and effective protection for activists and witnesses working against drugs. Medical stores must be inspected regularly, and strict action taken against those violating the law said Goyal
