Punjabi Sahit Akademi Demands Restoration of Punjabi as Official Language in Jammu and Kashmir

Ludhiana: October 6, 2026: Office-bearers, members of the executive board and all members of the Punjabi Sahit Akademi, Ludhiana, have strongly demanded that Punjabi be restored as an official language in Jammu and Kashmir.

News reports have appeared in newspapers regarding the demand by the Jammu Punjabi Morcha for restoration of Punjabi as an official language in Jammu and Kashmir. Supporters of the cause organised a peaceful protest rally there, effectively highlighting the demand, and warned of intensifying the agitation further.

The Punjabi Sahit Akademi, Ludhiana, has written to the Chief Minister and Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, demanding that Punjabi be restored as an official language there, as a large number of people in the region speak, read and write Punjabi.

President of the Punjabi Sahit Akademi, Ludhiana, Dr. Sarbjit Singh, and General Secretary Dr. Gulzar Singh Pandher have appealed to the Chief Minister of Punjab to intervene and use his influence to help resolve the issue. Senior Vice-President Dr. Pal Kaur said that Punjabi had been taught in schools there even before 1947, but the situation has now changed completely.

Sadhu Singh, Bhupinder Singh Sandhu, Sanjeevan Singh, Dr. Simarjit Kaur Gill, Dr. Tarspal Kaur, Manjinder Singh Dhanoa, Trailochan Lochi, Prabhjot Singh Sohi, Prin. Navtej Garhdiwala, Rajinder Singh Rajan, Makhan Maan and Rozy Singh.
