Punjab Politics: Congress and BJP Reshuffle Their Political Affairs Teams Ahead of 2027 Elections

The recent appointments by the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of new leaders to oversee political affairs in Punjab indicate that both national parties are preparing themselves seriously for the Punjab Assembly Elections 2027.
The All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary Sachin Pilot has been appointed as the new in-charge of Congress political affairs in Punjab, replacing Bhupesh Baghel. At the same time, BJP National General Secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Dr Satish Poonia has been appointed in-charge of the party’s political affairs in Punjab.
The reshuffle assumes significance as Punjab heads towards another crucial Assembly election, with political parties already intensifying their organisational and electoral preparations.
Sachin Pilot's Challenge in Punjab
The Congress decision to replace Bhupesh Baghel with Sachin Pilot appears to reflect the party high command’s intention to strengthen its organisation and address the groupism and internal differences that have affected the party in Punjab.
Sachin Pilot, a former Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan and a General Secretary of the AICC, is regarded as a young and energetic leader. He is the son of former Union Minister Rajesh Pilot.
His appointment is likely to be closely watched because one of his major challenges will be to bring different factions of the Punjab Congress closer and encourage greater coordination among senior leaders.
The new in-charge will have to work towards building a bridge among various party leaders such as Charanjit Singh Channi, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Amrinder Singh Raja Warring and Partap Singh Bajwa.
Whether Sachin Pilot succeeds in reducing differences and creating a more united Congress organisation will be an important factor in determining the party’s preparedness for the 2027 Assembly elections.
The appointment therefore appears to be a significant move by the Congress high command as it seeks to put its Punjab unit on a more coordinated footing ahead of the elections.
BJP Strengthens Its Punjab Strategy
The BJP has also made an important organisational appointment by assigning Dr Satish Poonia, National General Secretary and Rajya Sabha MP, the responsibility of overseeing political affairs in Punjab.
Dr Poonia has earlier handled important organisational responsibilities. His appointment in Punjab comes at a time when the BJP is attempting to expand its organisational base and electoral footprint in the state.
After assuming his new responsibility, Dr Satish Poonia visited Punjab to assess the political situation on the ground. He held meetings with state BJP office-bearers and party workers. During these visits, he interacted with district-level leaders and the party cadre. However, questions have also been raised within party circles regarding the participation of some senior leaders and those who had remained active in the organisation during difficult periods, including the years of militancy in Punjab.
BJP's 117-Seat Strategy
One of the most significant statements emerging from Dr Poonia’s Punjab visit was that the BJP would contest all 117 Assembly seats in the state and field its own candidates.
If implemented, this would indicate a clear strategy of expanding the BJP’s independent electoral presence across Punjab.
However, the final position regarding any possible alliance remains a matter for the BJP high command. Dr Poonia is expected to submit his assessment and report to the party leadership, following which the central leadership will take a final decision on the electoral strategy.
The BJP will therefore have to balance its ambition of contesting independently with the broader political calculations that could emerge before the 2027 elections.
BJP's Organisational Push
Dr Satish Poonia’s experience in Haryana will be an important asset as he takes charge of Punjab. He will nevertheless face a different political landscape in Punjab and will have to understand the state’s social, demographic and political dynamics closely.
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has also been visiting Punjab from time to time and interacting with BJP workers, thereby seeking to strengthen the morale of the party cadre.
BJP Punjab president Kewal Singh Dhillon and General Secretary Manthri Srinivasulu are also working to strengthen contacts with the party organisation and grassroots cadre.
The BJP has undergone several organisational changes in Punjab in recent times. Earlier, Sunil Jakhar as state president and Ashwani Sharma, MLA from Pathankot, were replaced. Former minister Manoranjan Kalia has been given responsibility related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
A Crucial Political Phase Ahead
The simultaneous reshuffling of political responsibilities by the Congress and BJP underlines the importance being attached to Punjab ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
For the Congress, the immediate challenge is to reduce internal differences, strengthen coordination among senior leaders and present a united political front.
For the BJP, the challenge is different. The party is seeking to expand its organisational presence across all parts of Punjab and establish itself as a serious contender in all 117 constituencies.
The coming months will reveal whether the new leadership arrangements can translate into stronger grassroots organisations and a more effective electoral strategy.
Punjab’s political landscape is already witnessing increased activity, and the latest appointments by the two national parties suggest that preparations for the 2027 Assembly elections have entered an important phase.
Let us hope that the coming days bring greater political clarity and healthy democratic competition in Punjab.
