Chandigarh, June 30 (IANS) Punjab Police's Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) has apprehended four accused after a brief exchange of fire near the Sirhind Canal Link Road in Bathinda, and recovered two sophisticated pistols from their possession, said Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav on Tuesday.

Those arrested have been identified as Gurdeep Singh, Sukhchain Singh and Gurvinder Singh, all residents of Salabatpura village in Bathinda; and Jashanpreet Singh, a resident of Dullewala village in Bathinda.

The recovered weapons include one 9MM Glock and one .30 bore pistol along with five cartridges and two empty shells. Apart from recovering weapons, police teams have also impounded their two motorcycles, which they were riding.

DGP Yadav said the preliminary investigation has revealed that the accused are linked to a criminal network and are wanted in a recent case registered at the Bhagta Bhaika police station in Bathinda.

The DGP said that further investigation is underway to establish links and identify other associates, and to uncover the wider criminal network.

Sharing operational details, Additional Director General of Police (AGTF) Promod Ban said a police team from AGTF Bathinda was chasing four suspects travelling on two motorcycles and, upon noticing the police party near Gobindpura village, they opened fire at the police party with the intention of evading arrest.

AGTF personnel retaliated by opening controlled fire in self-defence, he said, adding that during the exchange of fire, accused Gurvinder Singh sustained a bullet injury on his leg and two bullets struck the official vehicle being used by the police party.

The injured has been undergoing treatment at the local Civil Hospital, he added.

The ADGP said preliminary investigation has revealed that the accused were on their way to eliminate a member of their rival gang.

The accused arrested have a criminal history with multiple cases.
