Punjab Parties Step Up Political Activities Ahead of 2027 Assembly Elections

With the Punjab Assembly elections scheduled for 2027, political parties and leaders in the state have intensified organisational activities, public outreach and preparations for the electoral battle.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and various Akali factions are reviewing their organisational structures, meeting workers and supporters, and raising issues concerning the people in different parts of Punjab. Political statements targeting rival parties have also become increasingly visible as parties seek to strengthen their positions ahead of the polls.
BJP Focuses on Strengthening Organisation
The BJP has recently undertaken organisational changes in Punjab, including changes in its state leadership and the constitution of its state executive, morchas and cells. The party is also working to strengthen its district-level organisation and energise its cadre ahead of the elections.
The BJP's senior leadership is expected to maintain a close watch on Punjab as the party prepares for elections in the state as well as several other states. The proposed visit of senior national leaders is likely to provide an opportunity to assess the party's organisational preparedness and electoral strategy.
A key question before the BJP is whether it will contest all 117 Assembly seats independently or explore an alliance with another political party. The possibility of an electoral understanding with an Akali faction remains a subject of political discussion.
Congress Faces Internal Challenges
The Congress, meanwhile, continues to face questions regarding unity and internal differences among its leaders. The party high command will have to work towards bringing various factions together if it wants to mount a strong challenge in the 2027 Assembly elections.
There is also speculation about a possible visit by senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to Punjab. A united Congress organisation could significantly improve the party's electoral prospects, while continued internal differences could prove to be a major disadvantage.
AAP Relies on Welfare Schemes
The ruling Aam Aadmi Party has also begun making organisational adjustments in several Assembly constituencies. Changes in Halqa in-charges are being viewed as an attempt to increase direct interaction between party workers and voters.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and the AAP leadership are likely to rely heavily on the government's welfare measures and development initiatives while seeking a second consecutive mandate. Free electricity up to 300 units for eligible domestic consumers, free bus travel for women and social security benefits are among the issues the party is expected to highlight during the election campaign.
Akali Dal Faces a Changing Political Landscape
The Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) is also seeking to regain its political ground in Punjab. Party president Sukhbir Singh Badal has continued his outreach among workers, while the party's traditional organisational network remains an important factor in the state's electoral politics.
The emergence of other Akali formations, including Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De) and Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), could further influence the distribution of votes, particularly in rural constituencies.
Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De), with MPs Amritpal Singh and Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa, has established a presence among sections of the rural electorate. Its decision regarding participation in the Assembly elections and any possible electoral understanding will be closely watched.
The Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), headed by Simranjit Singh Mann, has also yet to make its complete electoral strategy clear, including whether it will contest independently or explore an alliance.
Alliance Politics Could Be Decisive
At this stage, it is too early to predict whether Punjab will witness a multi-cornered contest or a return to alliance politics. The possibility of both pre-poll and post-poll alliances cannot be ruled out.
A fragmented contest involving several political formations could make the electoral outcome difficult to predict and may increase the possibility of a hung Assembly if no party succeeds in securing a clear majority.
For now, Punjab's voters appear to be waiting for the political parties to announce their election manifestos and new promises. Issues such as employment, development, welfare schemes and the pending demands of government employees are likely to figure prominently in the campaign.
With several months still to go before the 2027 Assembly elections, the political landscape remains fluid. The coming months are expected to bring greater clarity on alliances, candidates, organisational strategies and the issues that will shape the electoral contest.
