Chandigarh, November 29, 2013: Renowned freedom fighter and former speaker of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha Harbans Lal Gupta died today at the PGIMER, Chandigarh. He was 95 years old.

Harbans Lal remained the speaker of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha from 25.3.1964 to 19.3. 1967. He remained a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court from 1975-1980 and thereafter was in active practice as a senior advocate in the Supreme Court for over two decades.

He was a minister of state in Pratap Singh Kairon's cabinet in the late1950s. He was one of the founder leaders of the Praja Mandal Movemnent in undivided Punjab before Independence and was detained by the British during the Quit India Movement. Sh. Harbans Lal was elected as MLA (Congress) from Bathinda in 1952, 1957 and 1962.

He is survived by his wife Satya, two sons-- Arun Gupta and senior advocate Anupam Gupta-- and daughter Jyotsana. The cremation will take place at 2.30 tomorrow at Cremation Ground Sector 25 Chandigarh.
