Chandigarh, December 23, 2013: Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Partap Singh Bajwa has written a letter to the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh with regard to the Sikh prisoners in jails across the country.
Bajwa wrote that prisoners continue to languish in jails across the country inspite of having completed their se ntence period, especially in the wake of issues raised by Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa, who has recently gone on fast unto death at Mohali (Punjab) in regard to releasing of prisoners who had completed their jail terms.
He added the present SAD-BJP regime has shown complete insensitivity towards the plight of those prisoners and has not taken any initiative to get these prisoners released.
Bajwa said he felt that this issue is significant when viewed in the backdrop of immense belief and obedience to the cherished principles of the rule of law. “Moreover our criminal jurisprudence firmly validates that a prisoner after having undergone his sentence period must be released from jail and accorded an opportunity to assimilate in society at large”, he said. He added in order to prevent the fueling of a sense of discontent and highhandedness, it is imperative that the state apparatus recognises the fundamental rights of all sections of society and gives them due consideration in accordance with the due process of law.
He said,” Therefore in the larger interest of justice, I would humbly urge you to intervene in the release of all these prisoners from all the jails across the country who have duly completed their sentence period by formulating a policy and appraisal be conducted on a case-to-case basis.”
At the end, Bajwa said, the above initiative taken by him (PM) would go a long way in assuaging the feelings of hurt and would help in bringing about lasting peace in the state of Punjab and convey a message of goodwill to all the families suffering across the country.
