Punjab News- Remove excise duty on some sports goods, says Sunil Jakhar to Union Minister

Chandigarh, September 24, 2013: Union government should remove the excise duty imposed on some sports goods as the same are being prepared by and large in the housing industry while it’s a cumbersome job to maintain its account.

This was apprised by Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Assembly Sunil Jakhar to Union Minister for Commerce, Industry and Policy  Anand Sharma during a meeting at Udyog Bhawan, New Delhi after paying gratitude for enhancing the subsidy on exporter loan to three from existing two percent.

Majority of the sports goods are utilised by students and due to imposition of taxes, it gets expensive, pleaded Jakhar.   

Being handmade, sports industry give employment to many but following imposition of excise tax, the sports industry is in disarray, Jakhar further apprised.

In concern with other excise related problems, Jakhar submitted a memorandum to Sharma and asked for relief on the lines of export policy for sports goods.

Majority of sports goods in India are prepared either at Merrut or Jalandhar while in Punjab a number of industrial units had shifted or shifting out hence to give existing sports industry a bat, required relief measures be taken immediately, Jakhar requested. 

In response to the demands of Jakhar, Sharma assured to raise up the matter with Finance Minister P.Chidhbram and get the excise duty on sports-goods be abolished. 

Sharma gave special instruction to GDFT and J.K.Dadu, Joint Secretary Commerce over above matter while Jakhar was accompanied by Pran Chadha, CEO Export Promotion Council, Punjab Bal Krishan Kohli Vice President, Export Promotion Council, Tilak Khinder, Regional Director Export Promotion Council and Kailash Anand, CEO Export Promotion Council Meerut.
