Chandigarh, Oct 5 (IANS) Former Punjab Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President and Pathankot MLA Ashwani Sharma on Monday alleged that the Punjab government was misleading the court in the matter of dearness allowance (DA) and betraying lakhs of government employees.

The Punjab BJP strongly condemned the government's conduct on the issue.

Sharma said that the BJP “stands with the employees and supports their rally to be held in Sangrur on October 10”.

He alleged that instead of giving employees their legitimate dues, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government was deliberately entangling the matter in the courts.

Referring to Monday's hearing in the DA case, Sharma said the High Court questioned Punjab Principal Secretary K.P. Sinha, who appeared before the court, over the non-filing of a compliance affidavit regarding the court's August 3 order directing the government to release DA within 15 days.

According to Sharma, when the Punjab government informed the court that it had filed a Special Leave Petition (SLP) in the Supreme Court, the court questioned why action had not been taken to rectify defects in the petition.

He further said that during an earlier hearing, the Punjab government had been directed to remove defects in the SLP, but had allegedly failed to do so.

Sharma said the court also observed that it had summoned the entire record from the Supreme Court, which would reveal the status of the government's actions in the matter.

According to him, the court directed the Punjab Chief Secretary to appear again and file a response. Also, it sought an explanation as to why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against the government.

In a statement, Sharma alleged that the Punjab government had continuously attempted to mislead the court, but such tactics would no longer work.

He reiterated that the BJP stood firmly with the employees' struggle and fully supported the rally scheduled to be held in Sangrur.
