Chandigarh, April 13, 2014: Punjab Governor and Administrator UT Chandigarh, Shivraj V Patil, extended warm greetings and good wishes to the people on the auspicious occasion of Baisakhi.
In his message Patil said that this day has a special significance for the Sikh community, as on this sacred day in 1699 Sri Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Guru of the Sikhs has created the Khalsa Panth, by baptizing panj payars (beloved ones) belonging to different regions and religions, thereby carving out a casteless society and preaching the gospels of love and compassion for mankind, universal brotherhood and communal harmony.
Governor said that Baisakhi has a multifaceted importance. This festival also marks the beginning of the harvest season and ripening of Ravi crop, a time of great joy for the farmers to gather the fruits of their hard labour.
On this occasion, Patil called upon the people to celebrate this joyous festival in unison with traditional fervour and gaiety to strengthen the secular and social fabric of our country.
