Khanna (Ludhiana), July 6, 2025: Cabinet Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond on Sunday reaffirmed the state government’s dedication to transforming Punjab into a sports hub through sustained efforts to develop world-class infrastructure.

Speaking as the chief guest at the prize distribution ceremony of a three-day cricket tournament held at Principal Ramesh Chander Stadium in Khanna, Minister Sond emphasized that under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s leadership, the ‘Khedan Watan Punjab Diyan’ initiative is driving large-scale promotion of sports across the state. He highlighted that 13 Centers of Excellence are being upgraded with advanced, modern facilities to nurture champions capable of competing at national and international levels. “This year, the Sports Department has been allocated Rs 979 crore, the highest in Punjab’s history, showcasing the Aam Aadmi Party government’s unwavering commitment to sports development,” he stated.

Minister Sond also noted that Punjab has no shortage of talent, but athletes require improved infrastructure and facilities, which the state government is actively providing. He underscored that engaging youth in sports is a key strategy to combat drug abuse and mobile addiction, fostering a healthier and more productive generation.

The Cabinet Minister also lauded the organization of such sports events, stating these tournaments are vital for steering youth away from drugs and encouraging active participation in sports.
 
The tournament, organized by Aam Aadmi Party youth leaders Gurseerat Singh and Hempreet Singh in memory of their late father, Jatinder Singh (Lucky), was lauded as an exemplary initiative.

Malerkotla MLA Dr. Jamil Ur Rehman, Patiala District Planning Committee Chairman Jasvir Singh Jassi Sohian Wala, Khanna Market Committee Chairman Jagtar Singh Gill Ratanheri, and several senior Aam Aadmi Party leaders and others were present.
