Punjab Employees ‘Maha Hartal’ Exposes AAP Government’s Financial Collapse: Tarun Chugh

Chandigarh, August 27, 2026: The massive ‘Maha Hartal’ by Punjab’s government employees and pensioners today is a direct reflection of the Bhagwant Mann-led AAP government’s financial mismanagement and administrative failure, said BJP National Office In-charge, Gujarat BJP In-charge and Member of Parliament Tarun Chugh. He said nearly 4 lakh government employees and lakhs of pensioners have been forced onto the streets demanding their legitimate dues and the release of the pending 18% DA. When the employees who keep the state administration running are compelled to protest for their own rights, it is a clear indictment of the government’s governance.

Chugh said the AAP government claims that it does not have the resources to pay employees their legitimate dues, yet has repeatedly found funds for publicity, advertisements and other avoidable expenditure. The government must explain why employees are being made to wait for approximately ₹20,161 crore in pending DA dues and when these arrears will actually be paid. Public money must serve the interests of Punjab’s people and its employees, not be diverted towards an elaborate publicity exercise designed to conceal the government’s failures.

Chugh said the situation has reached a point where even employees associated with the Chief Minister’s own office have been forced to protest outside the Chief Minister’s office and the Secretariat. The growing resentment among employees is a clear sign that the AAP government has lost their confidence. He said continued delay in clearing legitimate employee dues reflects the government’s disregard for the concerns of those who serve the people of Punjab.

Chugh said instead of addressing Punjab’s deteriorating financial situation through responsible governance, the AAP government has continued down the path of financial mismanagement and borrowing. Employees and pensioners are being asked to wait for their legitimate dues while the government continues to spend public money on publicity and external agencies. This is an injustice to Punjab’s hardworking employees and their families. The government should stop making excuses, immediately convene a meeting with employee representatives and ensure payment of pending DA and other legitimate dues.

Chugh said the BJP stands firmly with Punjab’s government employees and pensioners. Timely payment of salaries, pensions and legitimate financial entitlements is not a favour by any government but its basic responsibility. He appealed to employees and their families to reject AAP’s politics of promises and publicity. Chugh said that when the BJP forms the government in Punjab, the welfare, dignity and legitimate rights of government employees and pensioners will be among its foremost priorities.
