Punjab BJP slams rise in firing, extortion incidents
Former Punjab BJP President and former Rajya Sabha MP Avinash Rai Khanna on Monday strongly condemned the incidents of firing, extortion and snatching being reported from across Punjab and raised serious questions over the law-and-order situation under the Bhagwant Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government.
Chandigarh, Oct 5 (IANS) Former Punjab BJP President and former Rajya Sabha MP Avinash Rai Khanna on Monday strongly condemned the incidents of firing, extortion and snatching being reported from across Punjab and raised serious questions over the law-and-order situation under the Bhagwant Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government.
He said that the incident in Amritsar, in which GRP ASI Sukhchain Singh was allegedly fired upon by three motorcycle-borne individuals while returning home from duty, had once again raised serious concerns about the safety of police personnel.
Khanna said the incident of firing outside the house of a businessman from Sri Goindwal Sahib after he allegedly refused to pay Rs 1 crore as extortion money was also a matter of grave concern.
Besides, incidents of snatching involving a woman in the Kharar area have further heightened concerns regarding public safety, he added.
Khanna said, “Criminals in Punjab have become so emboldened that even police personnel returning home after duty are being targeted by attackers.”
He further said that those demanding extortion were allegedly carrying out firing outside people’s homes, while incidents of snatching and violence against ordinary citizens were also being reported.
According to Khanna, the situation raises serious questions about the government’s handling of law and order.
Khanna questioned the AAP government over who would ultimately take responsibility for ensuring a safe environment for the people of Punjab.
He demanded that the government conduct an impartial investigation into these incidents, arrest the culprits at the earliest and ensure justice for the victims.
“The people of Punjab are seeking security and results from the government, not merely statements,” Khanna said.
He added that the AAP government would have to explain what concrete action it was taking on law and order and when ordinary citizens would be able to feel safe.
