Punjab Assembly Elections 2027: Political Parties Intensify Campaigns as Battle for Power Gains Momentum

Political activity in Punjab is gathering pace as the state moves towards the Assembly elections 2027. Major political parties have stepped up organizational efforts, public outreach, and campaign strategies in an attempt to strengthen their support base and position themselves for the electoral contest. While the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is highlighting its governance record and welfare initiatives, opposition parties including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), and Waris Punjab De are working to consolidate their respective voter bases. Political observers also continue to watch closely for possible pre-poll or post-poll alliances, which could significantly influence the electoral landscape.
The BJP has expressed confidence about expanding its political footprint in Punjab and has repeatedly indicated its intention to contest the Assembly elections independently. The recent visit of BJP National President Nitin Nabin to Punjab, covering Amritsar, Jalandhar, and Ludhiana, was viewed as part of the party's efforts to energize its cadre ahead of the polls. The party has also announced district presidents and other office bearers to strengthen its organizational structure and has intensified outreach among different social groups, including participation in events marking the 650th Prakash Utsav of Guru Ravidas Ji. Party leaders are expected to continue highlighting governance, welfare measures, and development issues in the run-up to the elections.
The ruling Aam Aadmi Party is banking on its governance record and implementation of several election promises made in 2022. The party continues to showcase initiatives such as free electricity for eligible domestic consumers, free bus travel for women in government buses, and the implementation of the Mukhya Mantri Mawan Dhiyan Satkar Yojana. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has been undertaking district-level visits to review development projects and interact with the public. The party is also emphasizing irrigation improvements and efforts to ensure canal water reaches tail-end farmers, while expressing confidence about seeking a second consecutive term in office.
The Congress has intensified organizational activities under the leadership of Punjab in-charge Bhupesh Baghel, who has been holding meetings with party leaders and workers across the state. The focus appears to be on strengthening the party organization, improving coordination among leaders, and presenting a united front before the elections. The Congress leadership is expected to continue organizational restructuring while attempting to regain political ground in Punjab.
Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal), led by Sukhbir Singh Badal, is also working to rebuild its grassroots organization and reconnect with party workers. The party leadership has been emphasizing direct interaction with its cadre and hopes to regain political relevance in the upcoming Assembly elections after facing setbacks in previous contests.
Political observers are also watching the role of Waris Punjab De, particularly in view of Member of Parliament Amritpal Singh. Any decision by the organization regarding contesting seats or supporting candidates could influence electoral equations in certain constituencies.
The Bahujan Samaj Party, which has historically maintained a support base in parts of Punjab, has yet to clearly outline its electoral strategy for 2027. Similarly, the electoral plans of Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), including the number of seats it may contest, remain uncertain.
As the election approaches, speculation continues over the possibility of pre-poll alliances or post-poll arrangements among various political parties. The final electoral picture is also expected to be influenced by the completion of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the updated voter list. With several months remaining before polling, Punjab's political landscape is likely to witness increased campaigning, strategic realignments, and intensified competition among all major parties.
