Pune Emerges as India’s Robotic-assisted Surgery Hub, Blending Clinical Expertise, Training, and Affordable Care
Pune hospitals are leading the way with high-volume, high-complexity robotic procedures through structured training, clinical excellence, and a dedicated focus on complex cancer care
With hospital stays now halved and high-risk patients recovering faster, more patients from other cities are choosing Pune for its surgical advancements and low cost of living
Pune, November 05, 2025: With thousands of robotic-assisted surgeries performed annually and over 50 surgeons trained in advanced techniques in recent years, Pune has rapidly become one of India’s leading hubs for robotic-assisted surgery (RAS). While metro cities like Delhi and Mumbai often dominate the spotlight, Pune is setting new standards in high-precision, minimally invasive care across urology, oncology, gynecology, gastrointestinal, and pediatric specialties, offering advanced healthcare at nearly 20% lower cost than major metros.
The increasing adoption of advanced surgical technologies like the da Vinci by hospitals in Pune has not only expanded the range of advanced surgeries available but has also enabled faster recovery, fewer complications, and improved long-term outcomes for patients. What makes Pune stand out is its integrated approach that brings together surgical expertise, structured training, and patient accessibility.
Leading hospitals including Dinanath Mangeshkar Hospital (DMH) have played a key role in building robust robotic programs that focus on quality care and surgical mentorship.
“With over 200 robotic procedures completed, the DMH team now performs 12–15 complex surgeries each month, including prostate, kidney, and bladder cancer cases, as well as advanced urological procedures such as IVC thrombectomy, groin node dissection for penile cancer, testicular cancer, and robotic urinary diversions. We are increasingly seeing younger patients presenting with kidney cancers, and DMH today serves as a referral centre of excellence for kidney-saving partial nephrectomy surgeries,” said Dr. Ashwin Tamhankar, Consultant – Urological Oncology and Robotic Surgery at DMH. “Our program focuses exclusively on uro-oncology and cancer care, addressing a critical gap in Pune and helping us deliver consistent standards of excellence. Our dedicated, focused approach—driven by a multidisciplinary team of uro-oncology specialists, including a uro-radiologist, uro-pathologist, uro-physiotherapist, and fellowship-trained uro-oncology surgeon— helps patients recover faster through enhanced recovery protocols, minimal ICU stay, fewer transfusions, and shorter hospital stays — with even high-risk patients often able to move directly to the ward after surgery,” he added.
Structured training has become a defining focus at DMH. As a recognized proctoring centre for robotic surgery, the hospital’s team regularly mentors and supports surgeons from across India through their initial learning curve, ensuring confident adoption of robotic techniques.
“The future of robotic-assisted surgery depends as much on comprehensive surgeon training as on technological innovation. To further this vision, we are developing a dedicated fellowship program in Urological Oncology that combines hands-on clinical exposure with advanced simulation and guided mentorship. True success lies in equipping surgeons with the confidence and expertise to use these systems effectively and deliver safe, consistent, and high-quality care across the country,” Dr. Tamhankar emphasized.
Beyond medical expertise, Pune’s relatively lower cost of living compared to other metro cities makes it an increasingly attractive destination for patients and caregivers. With growing awareness and consistently strong clinical outcomes, the city is seeing a steady increase in patient volumes and referrals from across Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and even metro cities like Mumbai. Pune is also gaining recognition for its focus on organ-preserving treatments and minimally invasive techniques that prioritize post-surgical recovery and long-term quality of life.
In a healthcare landscape where access to innovation is often concentrated in large metros, Pune is showing how focused clinical leadership, commitment to training, and investment in technology can reshape the delivery of advanced surgical care across India.
