PU Sanskrit Department celebrates Deepotsava

Panjab University’s Sanskrit department celebrated Deepotsava today. Along with this, the department also held a special lecture under the celebration of Swami Dayanand Saraswati’s 200th birth-anniversary. Chief guest of Deepotsava and speaker of the special lecture was President award winner Prof. J. P. Semwal, Ex-Director V.V.B.I.S. & I.S., Hoshiarpur.

Chandigarh, November 7, 2023: Panjab University’s Sanskrit department celebrated Deepotsava today. Along with this, the department also held a special lecture under the celebration of Swami Dayanand Saraswati’s 200th birth-anniversary. Chief guest of Deepotsava and speaker of the special lecture was President award winner Prof. J. P. Semwal, Ex-Director V.V.B.I.S. & I.S., Hoshiarpur. 

Under the Deepotsava celebrations,  Rangoli, Hastakala and song/poem recital competitions were held. Students of MA Sanskrit participated in these competitions. The judges were Dr. Ananya and Dr. Nikita from the department of Laws. 

In his special lecture, Prof. J. P. Semwal began by telling the audience about the antiquity of Diwali. He said, “Diwali is being celebrated since the Vedic era, but we have associated some auspicious events with it.” Talking about Swami Dayanand Saraswati, he said that modern India is the result of Swami Dayanand’s vision. “Swami ji worked towards female education due to which today women are studying Sanskrit”, he added. Prof. Semwal said that Swami Dayanand spread the idea of Swaraj.

Academic incharge of Sanskrit department, Prof. V. K. Alankar gave a vote of thanks to the guests, judges, participants and the organising team. 

Winners of the Rangoli competition were : 1st prize for Priyanshu, 2nd for Poonam, 3rd for Manvi, and two consolation prizes for Yeshwant and Vasundhra. Winners of the Hastakala competition were : 1st prize for Manvi, 2nd for Neelam, 3rd for Priyanshu, and two consolation prizes for Abhishek and Poonam. Winners of song/poetry recitation competition were : 1st prize for Shivani, 2nd prize for Abhishek, 3rd prize for Mamta and two consolation prizes for Poonam and Vasundhra. Winners were given certificates and mementos.
