Chandigarh, October 8, 2026: The ongoing Film Appreciation Workshop, organised by the PU Centre for Media Studies (the outreach arm of the School of Communication Studies) in collaboration with the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, entered its second day on Thursday.
Led by key resource person Dr. Milind Damle of FTII, the sessions walked participants through the journey from story development to technical camera execution.
The morning session focused on conceptual development, pitching to producers, and the evolving landscape of Indian independent cinema. Dr. Damle addressed how story ideas emerge from everyday reality, including literary adaptations, news reportage, real-world events, mythology, and biographical subjects. Stories are placed all around us. We just have to look and identify them," remarked Dr. Damle during the session.
Day two also used noted Film Director Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots as a core case study to examine scripting decisions, visual continuity, and camera placement. The discussion highlighted how camera movement should organically serve the script during scene blocking.
The post-lunch session transitioned into technical shot breakdowns, selection rationale, and the four key phases of writing: ideation, story, screenplay, and dialogue.
"Screenplay and dialogue together make a script," Dr. Damle noted, emphasizing the practical bridge between shot descriptions on the page and visual execution on set.
