Prof. Suresh Sharma Appointed VC of Shaheed Bhagat Singh University

Prof. Suresh Sharma, a distinguished academician and researcher from the Department of Statistics, Panjab University, Chandigarh, has been appointed as the first regular Vice-Chancellor of Shaheed Bhagat Singh State University, Ferozepur, Punjab, by the Governor of Punjab.

Chandigarh, January 15, 2026: Prof. Suresh Sharma, a distinguished academician and researcher from the Department of Statistics, Panjab University, Chandigarh, has been appointed as the first regular Vice-Chancellor of Shaheed Bhagat Singh State University, Ferozepur, Punjab, by the Governor of Punjab. The appointment underscores his exceptional academic leadership, research excellence, and sustained contributions to higher education. He has served as Visiting Professor and Visiting Scientist at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, USA, and the VA Medical Centre, Dallas, Texas. He is also an Advisory Board Member of the International Medical Olympiad, Greece, and the London School of Management Education, UK.
 
He is the recipient of 17 prestigious national and international awards, including the Jacob Wolfowitz Award (USA), Best Research Award (AIIMS, New Delhi), S. G. Gaur Award, and the Excellence in Biostatistics Award, and is listed among the top 2% of scientists worldwide in the AD Scientific Index. He has led and contributed to several high-impact projects, notably the National Health Profile of India and the Public Health and Pollution Control in Asia (PAPA) project, in collaboration with PGIMER, ICMR, and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.
 
Prof. Sharma has published over 150 research papers in reputed national and international journals and has delivered more than 1250 invited lectures across India and abroad. He has represented India at over 40 international conferences across 32 countries and has conducted nearly 550 workshops on software like R, SPSS, AI/ML/DS, MATLAB, AMOS and Python. He has guided 20 Ph.D. and doctoral-level scholars in Statistics, Bioinformatics, and Medical disciplines, including MS/MD and DM, particularly in Biostatistics and healthcare research.
 
He has served on the panel of the NAAC and also associated with the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) as an advisory board member, contributing to national-level examinations and selection processes.
 
Prof. Sharma has held key academic leadership positions, including Chairperson of the Department of Statistics and Coordinator of the Centre for Systems Biology & Bioinformatics at Panjab University. His appointment as Vice-Chancellor is expected to further strengthen academic standards, research culture, global collaboration, and innovation at Shaheed Bhagat Singh State University, Punjab.
