Prof. Gurmeet Kaur Delivers Keynote at GSI’s 175th Anniversary Seminar on Geoheritage Preservation

Chandigarh December 3, 2025: The Geological Survey of India (GSI) invited Prof. Gurmeet Kaur, Department of Geology, Panjab University, to deliver a special lecture to mark the international seminar titled “Unearthing the Past, Shaping the Future: 175 Years of GSI” at Jaipur. The invited lecture was organised as part of GSI’s year-long celebrations commemorating 175 years of its contributions to geological mapping, mineral exploration, and national resource development, geoheritage. The event was inaugurated by Union Minister of Coal & Mines, G. Kishan Reddy. 

Prof Gurmeet Kaur in her keynote address in the thematic session “Guardians of Time: Geoheritage Preservation” spoke about the significance of identifying and preserving Geoheritage citing many examples from India and abroad. She also made the audience aware of the work being done by GSI which has been able to place seven Geoheritage sites of India in the tentative list of UNESCO natural world heritage site for consideration.

This honour by the GSI was a notable recognition of her significant contributions to geoheritage. She currently serves as the Chair of the Heritage Stone Subcommission of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) and has played a pivotal role, along with her team, in securing the inclusion of seven Indian stones under the prestigious IUGS Heritage Stone designation.

Prof. Kaur has earlier delivered keynote lectures at the 7th Global Stone Congress in Batalha, Portugal, and the 2nd International Stone Workshop in Torino, Italy. She also had the rare honour of presenting a public lecture at the 89th Annual Meeting of the Indian Academy of Sciences held at BITS Pilani Goa campus. Earlier this year, she was invited as Chief Guest at the International Women’s Day celebration at the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata, where she delivered an engaging address titled “Stones: Timeless Beauty and More.”
