Chandigarh, March 18, 2026: The Department of Zoology, Panjab University, Chandigarh today organised the prestigious Prof. G. P. Sharma Orationon.
The occasion was graced by Chief Guest Prof. Renu Vig, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University and Guest of Honour Prof. R. C. Sobti, former Vice Chancellor of Panjab University and BBAU, Lucknow.
Prof. Vig shared her insightful ideas on indigenous knowledge of our country on the herbal medicines and role of human DNA variations in healthcare.
Prof. Sobti talked about Prof. G. P. Sharma Oration Award, which was established in 2011to honour the legacy of the eminent cytogeneticist Late Prof. G. P. Sharma of the Zoology Department.
This year, 11th Prof. G. P. Sharma Award was conferred upon Prof. Subhash Chandra Lakhotia, Distinguished Professor and former SERB Distinguished Fellow, Department of Zoology, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. He delivered an insightful oration titled “My journey from extra-nuclear DNA to Cytogenetics, Molecular & Developmental Genetics,” sharing his vast research experience on genetics of Drosophila and integrating Ayurveda with modern medicine, thus inspiring the audience.
Earlier, the event commenced with an introductory address by Dr. Mani Chopra, Organizing Secretary of the event and welcome of dignitaries by Chairperson of the department, Dr. Ravinder Kumar.
Distinguished guests also released an annual report of activities of the department named as ‘Hippocampus’.
