Jalandhar: Prof. (Dr.) Atima Sharma Dwivedi, Principal, Kanya Maha Vidyalaya was bestowed with WISCOMP Saahas Award 2020 for her exemplary leadership in expanding the canvas of Gender equality in Higher education & for initiating projects for safe environment and places in higher education for women. Also for working on Gender Equity through Conflict Management and Peace for Women in Society. WISCOMP (Women in Security, Conflict Management and Peace) is a prestigious international organization supported by Public Affairs Section of American Embassy, New Delhi. It is an initiative of the Foundation for Universal Responsibility, which was established with funds from the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to His Holiness The Dalai Lama in 1989. 

WISCOMP Saahas Award  recognizes work of individuals who have provided inspiring leadership at their institution & have worked with WISCOMP as partners to promote the idea of Gender Audit Templates. Prof. (Dr.) Atima Sharma Dwivedi was awarded this prestigious award for enabling women to realize their potential as an equal citizen, by nurturing a space and discourse that empowers them with voice, agency, autonomy & an ability to lead. The selection for this prestigious award was done by the jury from across the globe on the basis of her contribution  in the arena of gender parity, equity & women empowerment and security. Prof. Atima’s selection reiterates her colossal initiatives in this direction. She ascertains that KMV continues its rich legacy of being a champion crusader for the cause of women and through the array of activities & initiatives to create a gender just society through various community programs as well. Speaking during the online  awards ceremony, the US embassy’s Public Affairs minister-counsellor, David Kennedy, applauded the collaboration between US and Indian higher-education administrators in sharing best practices to improve gender equality in university campuses across India.Dr Meenakshi Gopinath, Director, WISCOMP congratulated all the recipients of the Saahas Award. It is worth a mention here that Prof Atima Sharma Dwivedi holds more than 40 years of teaching and administrative experience in various institutions of India and abroad. Prof Dwivedi has taught in China for 3 years and has travelled extensively and has also represented India at various national and international platforms. Previously, Dr Dwivedi has also served as Principal in Government College in Punjab (PES-I). A PhD in Contemporary American Literature, she was selected to attend a program titled ‘Management and Leadership in Higher Education’ by Harvard University, USA. Prof Dwivedi also has a research project with Boston University, USA on global issues pertaining to higher education and making of global citizens. She has worked for women upliftment and empowerment for the past 40 years through higher education and her extensive work for army families for welfare and civilians in the remote areas of North East and J&K. No wonder then that she has been richly awarded and honored at various national & international platforms like Best research content award by Harvard University, USA and a huge tally of national and international awards. KMV is the first and only college to be awarded the Women Studies Centre. 

Prof. Atima, Director of the Centre has made colossal endeavors for gender sensitization and equity & equality of women. Under Women Empowerment Cell 4000 women who belong to the underprivileged society and are not the students of KMV have been imparted Skill Development training. Prof. Atima ensures that Women trained under Women Empowerment Cell stand on their feet and no wonder that they are running their boutiques, beauty salons, computer centers et al and are capable of providing employability to others. KMV management, faculty and students congratulated Prof Atima Sharma Dwivedi on this  remarkable achievement.
