Prayer and Condolence Meeting Held in Jhajjar in Memory of Former MDU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Vivek Chand Sharma

A prayer and condolence meeting was held in Jhajjar on Sunday in memory of former Vice-Chancellor of Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU), Rohtak, Prof. Vivek Chand Sharma. Eminent educationists, public representatives and intellectuals paid tributes to Prof. Sharma; and recalled his academic, administrative and social contributions.

Jhajjar, August 9, 2026: A prayer and condolence meeting was held in Jhajjar on Sunday in memory of former Vice-Chancellor of Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU), Rohtak, Prof. Vivek Chand Sharma. Eminent educationists, public representatives and intellectuals paid tributes to Prof. Sharma; and recalled his academic, administrative and social contributions.

Haryana Cabinet Minister Dr. Arvind Sharma, former minister Krishan Murti Hooda, former MLA Radheshyam Sharma, MDU Registrar Prof. Sandeep Bansal, social worker Ramesh Sharma, R.K. Yadav of Jhajjar and Congress Working Committee member Chakravarti Sharma were among those who paid tributes.

The prayer meeting was conducted by MDU’s Director, Public Relations, Sunit Mukherjee. On behalf of the family, Prof. Praveen Sharma, elder son of the deceased and Professor at Guru Jambheshwar University, thanked all those present. Prof. Sharma's wife Shakuntala Sharma, daughter Prof. Meenakshi Vashishtha, son-in-law Prof. Madan Gopal Vashishtha, younger son Naveen Sharma and other family members were also present.

Former Vice-Chancellor of IGU Meerpur, Prof. J.P. Yadav; Former Vice Chancellor of CBLU Bhiwani and IGU Meerpur, Prof. S.K. Gakhar; and former Registrar of CDLU Sirsa, Prof. Manoj Siwach, along with several academicians and teachers, attended the prayer meeting.

            MDU teachers, former and serving, retired and serving non-teaching employees also joined the gathering. Speakers recalled Prof. Sharma's simplicity, gentle personality and firm determination, describing his contribution to education, university administration and social service as significant.

Prof. Vivek Chand Sharma: A Distinguished Tenure

Prof. Vivek Chand Sharma passed away on July 30, 2026. Born on January 21, 1939, he served as Vice-Chancellor of MDU from February 23, 1994 to November 21, 1996. Earlier, he had served as Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the university and Principal of Government PG Nehru College, Jhajjar.

Known for his soft-spoken nature and strong administrative resolve, Prof. Sharma introduced comprehensive examination reforms during his tenure and took effective measures to curb the use of unfair means in examinations. He also initiated steps to free university hostels from unauthorised long-term occupants.

He also promoted a culture of academic discourse by holding multiple seminars and conferences during his tenure. The Sixth Convocation of the University was held during his tenure, on March 26, 1995, in which Chief Justice, Supreme Court of India, Justice A. M. Ahmadi was the Chief Guest.
