Chandigrah, June 26, 2014: PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry organised a one day workshop on “Self Defense for All” here yesterday at PHD House, Chandigarh.
Awareness, avoidance, prevention and execution are tools people can use to protect themselves from potential aggressors, said Dalip Sharma, Director PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Everyone, regardless of size or physical ability, can learn some simple self-defense strategies to stay safe, added Sharma.
"It is disturbing, the way crime against women increased across the country over the last few years. That's why we took a call to train as many women as we can," said Sharma.
Delving into the details, Sharma said, “The workshop consists of modules on negotiations, self-defense, rescue operations, offensive combat and escape methods. Mind-training, another module, will focus on recognizing the good from the bad, and reading dangerous situations so they can be avoided.”
Earlier, speaking on the occasion, Sukhchain Singh Gill, SSP, U.T. Chandigarh, said, “Self defense empowers you through your mind. It makes you feel more like a woman that should be safe and secure no matter where she goes instead ?of having to stay at home and hide or wait for somebody to take you? somewhere.”
“Avoiding confrontation through distance is the best defense. But sometimes people can’t get away, so they need to have a plan and some basic self-defense skills to fight back if someone violates their space”, said Rajeev Pal Singh, a blackbelt holder 4th Dan (AIKF); Black belt 6th (Shotokan Karate); Black belt Dan (Shito-Ryu Karate), the President-cum-Chief Technical Director of Karate-de-Indo- Ryu Association International, recognised by Ministry of Youth & Sports, World Karate Federation and International Olympic Committee (IOC), during the self defense workshop.
Singh demonstrated some quick fight back techniques that people can use to get away. She stressed that when one learns one’s limitations, one also learns and identifies one’s strengths.
In a confrontation, a person only has a few seconds to get away; thus, a victim must aim for the most vulnerable parts of the body: the eyes, nose, ears, neck, groin, knee and legs.
The main objective of this workshop was to acquaint and sensitize delegates with the various types of crime prevalent in our society, especially crime against children, women, men, senior citizens besides crime in general.
The workshop aimed at creating awareness regarding protecting and defending oneself from crime and simultaneously be a support to the others in such problems.
Effort was made to make participants aware of the various kinds of laws for defense besides inculcating strength and spirit to fight the wrong and contribute towards eradication of crime or injustice. Effort was also made to create a more sensitive, vigilant & assertive environment by teaching them defensive measures at the time of crime, and tools and aids to be used for prevention and defense against crime.
The programme focused on inculcating confrontation avoidance, reporting and self-defense through a series of warm-ups, strength training and activities.
Nearly 50 participants attended the workshop to learn basic skills to stay safe in everyday situations.
