PAU RELEASES 10 NEW VARIETIES OF HORTICULTURAL CROPS FOR CULTIVATION IN PUNJAB

Ludhiana, June 2, 2017: The Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has released seven varieties of vegetable crops and three varieties of flower crops for general cultivation in the state. These include PBH 5 of brinjal, Punjab Sona Cherry and Punjab Kesar Cherry of tomato, MH 51 of muskmelon, Punjab Bahar of bottle gourd, PunjabJhaarKarela 1 of bitter gourd, Punjab Suhawani of okra, Punjab Sunaina and Punjab Neelma of pansy, and Punjab Gainda No. 1 of marigold. All these varieties were approved after thorough discussion during the meeting of State Variety Approval Committee, held under the Chairmanship of Dr P.S. Aulakh, Director of Horticulture, Punjab. Dr Navtej Bains, Director of Research and Dr R.S. Sidhu, Director of Extension Education, PAU, also attended the meet.

The variety PBH 5 is an early maturing F1hybrid of long group of brinjal. Its plants are medium in height, compact, thornless with green foliage. Its fruits are long, medium sized and shining purple with green calyx. Its average yield is 255 q/acre.

The plants of tomato variety Punjab Sona Cherry are indeterminate in growth habit. Its fruits are borne in clusters of 20-25 with average fruit weight of 11g. Its average yield is 425 q/acre. Its shelf life is five days at ambient temperature and is suitable for protected cultivation.

The plants of tomato variety Punjab Kesar Cherry are indeterminate in growth habit. Its fruits are borne in clusters of 18-23 with average fruit weight of 11g. Its average yield is 405 q/acre. Its shelf life is six days at ambient temperature and is suitable for protected cultivation.

The vines of muskmelon variety MH 51 are vigorous and dark green. Its fruits are round and netted with green sutures. Its average fruit weight is 890 g. It is an early maturing hybrid and can be harvested after 62 days of transplanting. Its average fruit yield is 89 q/acre.

The vines of bottle gourd variety Punjab Bahar are medium long and pubescent. Its fruits are nearly round, medium sized, light green, shining and pubescent. Its average yield is 222 q/acre.

The vines of bitter gourd variety PunjabJhaarKarela 1 are medium long with green serrated leaves. Its fruits are attractive green, tender, spindle shaped and suitable for cooking by chopping. It is resistant to root knot nematode disease and its average yield is 35 q/acre.

The plants of okra variety Punjab Suhawani are medium tall, leaves deeply lobed, dark green with serrated margins. Its fruits are medium long, dark green, tender and five ridged. It has tolerance to yellow vein mosaic disease and its average yield is 49 q/acre.

The plants of pansy variety Punjab Sunaina are dwarf, leaves light green, flowers purple and yellow. It is an early variety and bears small sized flowers for four months. It gives 16 g/plant seed yield and is suitable for pot culture and bedding.

The plants of pansy variety Punjab Neelma are dwarf, leaves dark green and flowers purple. It is an early variety, bears small sized flowers for four and a half months. It gives 18 g/plant seed yield and is suitable for pot culture and bedding.

The marigold variety Punjab Gainda No. 1 is open pollinated, heat tolerant variety with fully double, medium sized, orange coloured flowers, suitable for flower production during summer season. It has height of 69 cm and flowersin 82 dayswith a flower yield of 44 q/acre.
