PAU organized citrus show cum seminar for citrus farmers

Ludhiana, January 24, 2024: A Citrus Show Cum Seminar also known as “Kinnow mela” was organized on January 23-24, 2024, at Punjab Agricultural University's (PAU) Research Station in Abohar, Punjab. The show featured a competition of citrus fruits and products made from them, with over 2,000 entries showcasing the best of the region's citrus harvest.

The event was well-attended by farmers of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan by bringing their best fruits and products as entries on the first day of the event. Around 2500 farmers, dignitaries from California State University, Punjab Agricultural University and officials from department of horticulture witnessed the display of citrus fruits and products. Stalls of various private industries related to citrus and allied government departments were set up for the farmers.

Dr. Satbir Singh Gosal, Vice-Chancellor of PAU, inaugurated the event and emphasized the importance of such shows and seminars in promoting citrus cultivation and disseminating knowledge among farmers. Dr. Ajmer Singh Dhat, Director of Research highlighted the research initiatives undertaken by PAU to develop new and improved citrus varieties and technologies to enhance the productivity and profitability of citrus farming.

The fruit competition was divided into several categories, including mandarins, sweet oranges, grapefruits, lemons, lime, etc besides various categories of home-made products of citrus fruits. Prizes were awarded to the best entries in each category, based on factors such as appearance, size, taste, and nutritional value.

In addition to the competition, the seminar provided a platform for agricultural experts to share their knowledge and insights on the latest advancements in citrus cultivation, pest and disease management, and post-harvest handling. Farmers also had the opportunity to interact with researchers and other experts, discussing their challenges and seeking advice on improving their citrus farming practices.

Dr. MS Bhullar, Director of Extension Education, reiterated PAU's commitment to providing farmers with the knowledge and resources they need to succeed in citrus cultivation. He also encouraged farmers to actively participate in extension programs and events to stay updated on the latest advancements in citrus farming.

Dr. Anil Kumar Sangwan, Director, Regional Research Abohar, thanked all the dignitaries for sharing their knowledge and farmers for participating and attending the show cum seminar in huge numbers.

The event was a resounding success, with farmers and agricultural experts alike appreciating the opportunity to learn, network, and share their experiences.
