PAU celebrates International Biodiversity Day

The Department of Forestry and Natural Resources in collaboration with the NSS Unit of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), celebrated International Day for Biological Diversity 2023 today by organizing different events under the theme ‘From Agreement to Action: Build Back Biodiversity.’

PAU celebrates International Biodiversity Day

Ludhiana, June 5, 2023: The Department of Forestry and Natural Resources in collaboration with the NSS Unit of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), celebrated International Day for Biological Diversity 2023 today by organizing different events under the theme ‘From Agreement to Action: Build Back Biodiversity.’ Around 450 students participated in the programme, sponsored by the National Biodiversity Authority through Punjab Biodiversity Board, Punjab State Council of Science and Technology, Chandigarh. It created awareness on the subject and sensitized students regarding importance of biological diversity.

Dr Satbir Singh Gosal, Vice-Chancellor, PAU, who was the chief guest, emphasized on the importance of biodiversity, preservation of environment, and called upon the participants to sustain cleanliness around their surroundings.

Dr Nirmal Jaura, Director Students’ Welfare and Dr RIS Gill, Estate Officer, were the guests of honour.

Dr SS Hundal delivered an informative talk on biodiversity, and Dr Rajnish Kumar Verma shared his experience of preserving the traditional tree species of the Punjab by planting mini forests on panchayat lands with the involvement of MNREGA workers.

Dr GPS Dhillon, Head, Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, gave a brief introduction about the event, while Dr HS Sarlach shared the activities of NSS volunteers in various social programmes.

About 100 students participated in poster making, slogan writing and photography competitions, which were coordinated by Dr Divya Utreja, Dr Harpreet Singh, Dr Kaushik Mandal, Dr Manjot Kaur and Dr Kamaldeep Kaur. Dr RIS Gill, Dr KS Sangha and Dr Navneet Kaur were the judges for all the competitions.

In poster making competition, Ms Shristi Samwal, Ms Tanvi Bhatia and Ms Diya Jain secured the first three positions, whereas in slogan writing, Ms Sirjan Kaur, Ms Avneet Kaur and Ms Neha won the top three positions. In photography, Mr Ankesh, Ms Sarveen Kaur and Mr Vipin Kulhari got the first, second and third positions, respectively. Certificates and mementos were presented to the winners.
