Parminder Mehta Attacks Centre Over UPI MDR Decision, Says It Will Increase Financial Burden on Middle Class

Ludhiana, September 16, 2026: Senior leader and former councillor Parminder Mehta criticised the Central Government over the decision to impose a 0.4% Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on select UPI merchant transactions above ₹2,000 from October 15, 2026.
He alleged that after promoting digital payments, the provision to levy charges on high-value UPI transactions has raised concerns among the poor, middle class and small businesses.
Mehta said the economic policies of the Modi government were affecting ordinary families and the middle class, and urged the government to take decisions that do not impose an additional financial burden on the common people. He demanded that the Centre reconsider the UPI fee structure.
Mehta said the government should ensure that the burden of MDR is not passed on to customers in any form and that the interests of the middle class and small shopkeepers are clearly protected.
