Pargat Objects to Repeated Closure of Punjab Borders with Concrete Barricades

Chandigarh, August 18, 2026: Former Education Minister and MLA Pargat Singh has strongly objected to the repeated installation of concrete barricades to block routes at the Punjab-Haryana border and condemned the move. Questioning the silence of the Punjab government and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on the issue, he asked whether a state government can erect concrete walls and block the movement of people from another state in such a manner.
Pargat said that when the Haryana government is once again barricading the borders adjoining Punjab, the silence of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is difficult to understand. The Punjab government should have immediately taken up the matter officially with the Haryana government. The Chief Minister must answer the people of Punjab on this issue. The government should also clarify why the Punjab government has not registered any objection with the Central Government in this matter.
He said that if security arrangements are necessary to maintain law and order, governments must also ensure that the movement of the general public, trade and everyday life are not unnecessarily disrupted. The heavy barricading by the Haryana government in areas along the Punjab border is affecting the movement of ordinary people, farmers and vehicle drivers.
Pargat said the government must explain what clear legal basis exists for keeping inter-state routes closed in this manner for a prolonged period. It should also inform the people what steps have been taken so far to address the difficulties being faced by the citizens of Punjab.
