Panjab University’s Three-Day Film Appreciation Workshop Concludes
Chandigarh, October 9, 2026: Three-day Film Appreciation Workshop, organised by the PU Centre for Media Studies (the outreach arm of the School of Communication Studies) in collaboration with the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, concluded on Friday with a valedictory session. Led by key resource person Dr. Milind Damle of FTII, the workshop took participants from the origins of cinema to the finer points of editing and sound.
Final day focused on the language of editing. Dr. Damle explained montage and its metric, intellectual, and tonal forms, along with the juxtaposition of images, types of cuts and transitions, shot types, and the principles of continuity. Participants also discussed his short film Pandha Chivda (White Flakes), which he wrote and edited.
Sessions turned to sound design and the folly effect, the art of creating sound in sync with the picture. Clips from The Godfather were screened to show how the juxtaposition of sound shapes a scene. "All those things you see on screen may not be heard; those which you can't see may be heard," remarked Dr. Damle during the session.
Earlier days two days of the workshop had covered the journey from the Lumière Brothers' first screening in 1895 to talkies, playback singing, and OTT releases, followed by pitching, screenplay writing, and a scene-wise study of Rajkumar Hirani's 3 Idiots. Throughout, the sessions were built on open discussion between participants and the resource person rather than slides alone.
Valedictory session was attended by Professor Arun Grover, former Vice Chancellor of Panjab University, and Professor Archana R. Singh, Chairperson of the School of Communication Studies. Certificates were distributed to the participants during the session. Dr. Bhavneet Bhatti delivered the vote of thanks.
