Panjab University’s ‘Kesariya Rangatha’ Wins Standing Ovation at Studio Theatre
The Department of Indian Theatre, Panjab University, Chandigarh, today presented its theatrical production “Kesariya Rangatha”, a dramatic adaptation of Shri Raghuveer Sharan Mitra’s acclaimed novel Sone Ki Raakh, before a packed audience at Studio Theatre. The performance was met with overwhelming appreciation and concluded with a standing ovation.
Chandigarh, June 9, 2026: The Department of Indian Theatre, Panjab University, Chandigarh, today presented its theatrical production “Kesariya Rangatha”, a dramatic adaptation of Shri Raghuveer Sharan Mitra’s acclaimed novel Sone Ki Raakh, before a packed audience at Studio Theatre. The performance was met with overwhelming appreciation and concluded with a standing ovation.
The production was formally inaugurated by PU Vice Chancellor Prof. Renu Vig, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Addressing the gathering, Prof. Vig appreciated the Department’s continued commitment to artistic excellence and cultural enrichment. She congratulated the students for their remarkable dedication and performance, and commended Dr. Navdeep Kaur, Chairperson, Department of Indian Theatre.
Rooted in the rich folk traditions of Rajasthan, Kesariya Rangatha brought alive the legendary saga of Rani Padmini through an engaging blend of music, movement, visual imagery, and ensemble performance. The production offered audiences a powerful theatrical experience marked by emotional depth, aesthetic richness, and compelling storytelling.
A distinctive feature of the production was the participation of all M.A. Part-I and Part-II students of the Department. For more than two months, the students underwent intensive training and rigorous rehearsals under the artistic guidance of Dr. Navdeep Kaur. Their dedication, discipline, and collaborative spirit were evident throughout the performance, earning widespread appreciation from the audience and invited guests alike.
The production was adapted, designed, directed, and lyrically conceived by Dr. Navdeep Kaur. The music was composed by Dr. Tejinder Singh and Anmol Joshi, while the lighting design was created by Himanshu B. Joshi.
By seamlessly integrating folk aesthetics, live music, movement, and visual storytelling, Kesariya Rangatha reaffirmed the Department of Indian Theatre’s commitment to artistic innovation, cultural engagement, and excellence in performance. The production stands as a celebration of collective creativity and the enduring power of theatre to connect audiences with history, heritage, and human values.
